Vermouth is an aromatized, fortified wine, flavoured with various botanicals and sometimes coloured. The modern versions of the beverage were first produced in the mid to late 18th century in Turin, Italy. Vermouths have either a white or red wine base and are either dry or sweet (though most red vermouths are sweet).
More than just a cocktail ingredient, you can drink vermouth on its own over ice or with sparkling tonic or soda.
